FOUND IN PORTLAND: Tracy Tsefalas, owner of Fumerie Parfumerie, shares her top Pacific Northwest picks.
Published April 2017
Located on Division Street, this perfume boutique evokes early 20th-century grandeur with oxblood-colored walls and a rolling bookshelf ladder. "It has the coziness of a small library," says owner Tracy Tsefalas, who stocks nearly 30 independent fragrance lines. "We wanted to get back to the idea that perfume is art." Her small team regularly hosts perfumers, as well as workshops and fragrance swaps, but the daily focus is on helping customers find their next scent. "In a way, it's part of your identity." [...]

Portland, Oregon's Fumerie Parfumerie opened its doors almost one year ago to the day. Filling a gap in the Northwestern perfume retail sector by offering the best of American and European indie, niche and artisan fragrances and toiletries, Fumerie quickly established a reputation for excellent selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff (owner Tracy Tsefalas and parfumier André Gooren) and a comfortable, beautifully appointed atmosphere that recalls a European salon as much as a perfume boutique.
One of the ways Fumerie engages its customers is by holding events that provide fragrance education, opportunities to explore notes and categories and a chance to meet and chat with the perfumers behind some of the 21st century's hottest brands. Such events are popular and valuable to members of the perfume community. However, Fumerie has taken things a step further with a series of events that no other boutique appears to be offering at this time:

THE 5 MUST-VISIT BEAUTY SPOTS IN PORTLAND, OREGON
Published November 3, 2016
A gauntlet of department store employees shoving spritzed paper sticks under your nose is no way to discover your signature scent. At this fragrance boutique, you can pull a leather stool up to the bar and get a one-on-one consultation to help you zero in on an indie perfume from one of 26 “houses” (a fancy term for brand) based on which family (floral, citrus, green, etc.) you’re drawn to. Fumerie also hosts fragrance swaps where patrons can exchange bottles among themselves. [...]
TOP 10 FALL FRAGRANCES 2016
NOW SMELL THIS
Published October 14, 2016
To give you a thoughtful top ten for fall, I went to the experts: Tracy and André at Fumerie. Both of them used to work at Portland’s Perfume House and amassed years of experience with the classics. Then, seven months ago, Tracy opened Fumerie to focus on niche fragrances, and André joined her.
To give you an idea of their tastes in fragrance, Tracy has a tattoo on her forearm of her favorite perfume notes: patchouli, hay, tobacco, cocoa, and leather. When she thinks of fall, she thinks of comforting scents that remind her of riding her horse as a teenager through the leaves, and the smells of Oregon's crisp autumn air, sweet alfalfa, saddle leather, grain and the horse itself. IN SERVICE: FOUR STORES ACROSS THE COUNTRY LOOK TO REWRITE THE RULES OF THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
WWD BEAUTY INC
Published October 2016
Tracy Tsefalas opened Fumerie, a vintage inspired boutique reminiscent of Twenties French fragrance salons, to give niche perfumers a voice and showcase their unique creations. Although the store is only 500 square feet, it packs a punch, stocking more than 29 brands including Nasomatto, Serge Lutens and Imaginary Authors. "We don't have any pressure to try to sell the latest release because it's new or needs to be sold," says Tsefalas, noting fragrance swaps and in-depth consultations define Fumerie's approach to service. "We work to find something that's right for the customer, for a much more personal experience."

Portland is not the sort of city commonly associated with exquisite perfumery. More known for beer, bicycles, and putting birds on things, Portland is even infamously home to government buildings where perfume has been “voluntarily” banned. However, Portland is also a hotbed of alternative art created by independent artisans, and that’s the inspirational spirit behind Portland’s first niche perfume shop, Fumerie Parfumerie. [...]

The City of Roses has a new perfume boutique, and it's a very welcome addition to Portland and the Northwest region; fragrance brands that have never been seen here before are now available at Fumerie Parfumerie on SE Division Street. Tracy Tsefalas, former longtime manager of The Perfume House, decided to go out on her own when she realized that she really wanted to focus on what is happening in today's intensely creative world of niche and artisan perfumery, whose makers are doing the best work in terms of originality, artistic concepts and high quality materials. These fragrances were not not approved by penny-pinching accounting departments or tested repeatedly by focus groups until all the interesting parts have been removed, leaving only a scent that smells like a hundred others, with a big advertising budget and no soul. No, these are from a fabulous alternate universe where perfumers and creative directors can play with ideas and take their time until wonderful things happen, unchecked by narrow corporate ideas of what will sell.
